Gear up for Bible School

Get out your hiking boots and gear up for a great time at bible school. July 22-26 families are encouraged to make plans to attend. There will be something there for all ages, including teens and adults. "Son Canyon, A River Adventure through Proverbs," will teach us all lessons of wisdom. Students are taught to trust Jesus, show respect, make peace, choose friends wisely, and follow God's instructions through the teaching of Proverbs. There will be fun activities for all ages. The youth will be preparing skits for each night. Please plan to join the fun and invite your friends too. Classes for Preschool - fifth grades will be held Monday through Thursday. Also, Sandra and Tammy will be preparing a lesson for the women. The craft this year will be a photo album. Sandra promises no crocheting or sewing. There will be a pool party on Friday. For more information on vacation bible school, or if you are interested in helping, please see Wendi Hunt.

Youth News

Some of the teens have began working on the skits for bible school. They will perform each night to open the program, then will help the adults with the children's activities. If you want to participate, skit practice will be Wednesday nights at 7pm from now until bible school begins. Remember, the first sunday in September is move-up day for Sunday School Students. There will be some changes to the class arrangements. If your child or teen will be moving up, please prepare them for the change. All children's ministries (Preschool-5th grade are overseen and approved by Kristi Thomas, and all teen ministries (6th-12th grades) are overseen and approved by Donald Walker. Please see Donald or Kristi with any questions concerning your children.

Star Pangled Banner

The first stanza we all know, but have you ever sung the last stanza of "The Star Spangled Banner"?

Blest with victory and peace,
may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made
and preserved us a nation!
Then conqer we must
when our cause is just.
And this be our motto:
"In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner
in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free
and the Home of the brave

Devotional

True Freedom - Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:36

The third century church father, Tertullian, said, "The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church." This was proved when Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was killed in Jerusalem for freely worshipping Jesus Christ. When persecution increased, the church spread out and multiplied. The same thing happened in 20th century China. When the Communists took away the freedom of Christians, the church went under-ground and grew by millions. History proves that there is an even greater freedom than that granted by governments.

The greatest freedom is freedom from sin. One can live in America and still be a slave to sin. Or one can live under the most oppressive political regimes on earth and be completely free. Spirit-led Christians living in America have the best of both worlds -- both political and spiritual freedom. While the former may be taken away, the latter can never be. When Jesus Christ broke the yoke of slavery, He proclaimed "liberty to the captives" (Luke 4:18). To what do you attribute your freedom -- to being an American or being a Christian?

Turning Point - Proverbs 9:1-11:31
Freedom is the right to do what you want but the power to do what you ought

-Charles Kingsley
